Research Activity, Evidence-based Nursing Practice, and Accessibility of Information Resources in Clinical Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to explore research activity, evidence-based nursing practice (EBNP), and accessibility of information resources in Methods: A descriptive study using cross-sectional survey method was utilized. Subjects were recruited from the nurses who were working at hospitals in Korea. Research activity, EBNP, and accessibility of information resources were measured by a structured questionnaire which was developed for this study. Data were analyzed by using the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and Results: A total 372 subjects were invited to this study. The mean age of subjects was 29.41 ¡¾ 5.79 years and four-fifths were worked for tertiary hospitals. Research activity was relatively quiet low level. Level of understanding EBNP was low but perception of necessity for and application of EBNP were high. Printed materials and human resources were frequently used to acquire evidence applying EBNP. The group that had the experience of research participation in clinical unit, the positive intention about future research participation, regularly read research article, membership of nursing academy, attendance of academic conference, had statistically higher accessibility of information resources than the other groups. There was statistically difference in accessibility of information resources among the groups by the degree of understanding EBNP, by the perception of necessity for EBNP, by application EBNP, by the positive intention about application of recent evidence distinct form current clinical practice, by level of searching skill related to research documents. Conclusions: To improve accessibility of information resources, nursing managers and educators ought to encourage nurses take an active part in research activity. In addition, educational strategies were required to understand and implement EBNP more clearly. These efforts would provide the world of nursing science to organizational culture facilitating EBNP.
